A Letter to First Time Puppy Owners About Housebreaking

Dear First Time Puppy Owner, You must be so excited to finally have puppy home. If you’re anything like us, that first day was preceded by months of research and looking at breeders and adoption agencies as you tried to find the right little puppers for you and your family. Then weeks of nesting as you try to accumulate all the supplies you’ll need. The toys, the collars, the treats, the bowls… And now finally… finally puppers is home. They’re sniffing around, exploring their new home. Playing with all those new toys with the enthusiasm and exuberance that only a puppy can really muster. And then, pee. It may be…

Tips for Surviving Puppy’s First Few Weeks at Home

Raising a puppy is some exhausting business, let me tell you. Haruka has officially been part of the family now for about a month, and I am tired, constantly smell like puppy kibble, and am covered in itty bitty puppy bites. It is as demanding as it is rewarding, but I wasn’t expecting it to be such a wake-up call for me. I’ve helped raise puppies before, and so I thought I knew what to expect. However, while this may not be my first puppy rodeo, I don’t think I ever realized exactly how challenging it is when you’re doing it relatively on your own. All my puppy experiences before…

    Meet Seiglinde.

I’m a little late on this post, since we got her in June and she’s pretty much a full grown dog by now, but better late than never I suppose. So this is Seiglinde. Pronounced Zig-Lin-Deh. I call her Linde (Lindy) for short. My mom and I spent the entire hour and a half ride up and back from the breeder’s arguing about her name. Ultimately Mom won, since she’s her dog not mine. Seiglinde is Brunhilde’s half sister. They share a poodle father. They are both also characters in a Wagner opera – one of the Ring cycle shows. I don’t know which one. I never cared for Wager.…

    What’s Up, Wednesday?

During the lull of the last few months I’ve been… … listening to: America’s Next Top Model. I can’t really say that I’ve been watching it, as it’s mostly just been on in the background as I work. I like seeing the results of the photo shoots, and there’s something about Tyra Banks that I just really like for whatever reason. I don’t really have words for why I like her so much, but I do. I know she’s got a reputation for being a little bit cuckoobird, but I love it. She just seems like she’s so unabashedly her, and I admire that. I imagine it’s far easier to…

“You think dogs will not be in heaven? I tell you, they will be there long before any of us.” —Robert Louis Stevenson

So I mentioned in my “easing back onto the blog” post that this spring has been just kind of hit after hit – it in many ways exemplified the saying, “When it rains, it pours.” But there was one hit that was significantly harder than the others… We had to say goodbye to our older family dog Rusalka a few weeks ago. It’s hit us all very hard. I’m still sort of at a loss for words, because she was… something really special. From the very day we brought her home. And that description is so incredibly insufficient. You know, when Genghis died two springs ago, I was full of…

Mani Monday (Tuesday? Whoops): Christmas Edition

I’m a day late for Mani Monday because I was hanging out at my parents’ place with Hilde and the Plooper (and my parents too!), but I do want to share my Christmas manicure with you guys before the year ends (like, holy crap, where did the rest of December go exactly?). Like last christmas, I went rather simple this year – mainly due to time constraints. Christmas Eve is always a hectic day for me, because in addition to prepping all my presents for others and packing a bag for my parent’s house for the next few days, I also have to prep myself for work (I sing at…

    Meet Hilde

Blog? Meet Brunhilde. She’s my parent’s new puppy. And she’s awesome. She’s a little bit bold, a little bit clumsy, and all daredevil. Hilde had a rather rough introduction into our lives. Within three hours of bringing her home, she was already adapting well – running around with that excited bliss that only puppies really have. But then she tried to superman dive towards a toy, landed wrong, and immediately started screeeeaaammmmmiiinnnggggg. Turns out clumsy-girly-dog had landed on her elbow and broke the little nub on it. So Brunhilde, in the span of three hours, had her first car ride, met her new family and sister dog, explored her new…
